Under general supervision of the project Chief Tunnel Inspector performs duties which include inspection of tunnel and shaft work for adherence to contract documents, writing daily inspection reports, and review of field work and work product; may provide technical guidance to less-experienced field personnel. Willingness to relocate to construction site location in Akron OH is required. This project includes a CSO tunnel, connector tunnels, shafts, intake facilities, and various other surface and near surface facilities in the City of Akron OH. The main tunnel will be driven with a crossover TBM capable of running in EPB or open mode. The main tunnel is lined with precast concrete segment tunnel liner. The project also includes drill and blast connector tunnels and shafts. The main tunnel is excavated to a diameter of 30.5’ with a 27’ finished diameter and a length of approximately 6,200’.


  • Working with TBM tunnel excavation, support and segmental concrete lining; shaft excavation, support and final lining; drill and blast excavation;

  • Assists in review of RFI’s, submittals, work plans, change requests, applications for payment and value engineering proposals.

  • Works with the chief inspector to verify that tests and inspections are performed, witnessed, and documented in accordance with approved procedures. Helps prepare and resolve non-compliance notices.

  • Monitors compliance with permit requirements and coordinates any necessary actions by the construction management staff.

  • Inspects contractors work for conformance to contract requirements. Uses experience to identify issues, looks forward to potential issues and works with appropriate parties to resolve.

  • Collaborates with construction management team to identify hazards associated with the work that may adversely affect the environment or the safety or health of employees. Reviews and interprets construction contract documents to verify correct technical execution of the work.

  • Checks and measures the performedwork.

  • Initiates and maintains records, photographs, daily reports and other documentation as required. Participates in various meetings as requested by the chief inspector.


  • Degree in engineering or construction management and 5 or more years of experience in field inspection of construction of large diameter TBM tunnel projects. 10 or more years of field inspection of large diameter TBM tunnel project experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree and 5 years of experience.•Inspection experience with EPB TBM driven tunnel with segmented precast tunnel liner is a plus.•Requires a working knowledge of construction-related processes, tunnel industry practices, and tunnel safety requirements.•Excellent written and oral communication skills, a familiarity with PC software packages typically associated with construction management including Microsoft Office.
