The Data Scientist leads the requirements generation, system design, system architecture, implementation, and governance of data architectures and data management systems, supporting system-level Modeling and Simulation systems (MS). This position makes use of proven and cutting edge techniques and technologies to oversee all aspects of the data architecture and supporting data manipulation and exploitation tools for system-level MS. The Data Scientist provides technical advice and assistance to the Director of MS Enterprise Engineering, who is responsible for oversight and lifecycle management of system-level MS and advocates for appropriate and effective technical standards.


  • Demonstrated experience with data technologies such as data pipelines, data services, operational data stores, data warehouses, and data marts

  • Expertise in large data store to support experimental design and the resulting statistical inference.

  • Experience selecting, installing, and using data mining and visualization tools

  • Experience designing data-based solutions using standard interfaces and integrating multi-layered data across systems.

  • Experience designing and implementing cloud-based, enterprise-wide data solutions.

  • Ability to lead development of enterprise data models and specifications.

  • Ability to lead development of tools for monitoring and analysis of data model performance and accuracy over time.

  • Knowledge of statistical and predictive modeling, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and other algorithms.

  • Knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques (clustering, decision tree learning, artificial neural Networks, etc.) and their real-world advantages/drawbacks is preferred

  • Experience applying data science techniques to solve business intelligence or statistical inference problems.

  • Knowledge of best practices for data architecture principles, standards, and guidelines.

  • Ability to create overall vision for MS data use for MDA.

  • Ability create and maintains data governance processes in collaboration with data users.

  • Ability to interact with and lead stakeholders in generating new MS data requirements and data exploitation opportunities.

  • Creative thinking, problem solving, analytical thinking, strategic thinking and out-of-the-box thinking

  • Ability to work with a diverse team of systems engineers and modelers at different locations and with different perspectives, skillsets, and backgrounds.

  • Ability to effectively communicate complex data management ideas to non-technical managers and integrated product team members.

  • Energetic, motivated, self-starting.

  • The right individual will display both a passion for answering difficult or ambiguous questions with data science and leading a cultural change in how data is used throughout the organization.


  • Ph. D. in applicable field desired (e.g. computer science, data science, applied statistics, etc.).

  • Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) domain experience working in MDA.

  • Exposure to definition, design, development, verification and validation, and analysis of BMDS MS (constructive or distributed virtual simulation of the BMDS and its elements and components).

  • Exposure to analysis, test, and systems engineering of MS for one or more elements of the BMDS (i.e. Patriot, THAAD, GMD, Sensors, or C2).

  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Systems Modeling Language (SysML) and other languages typically used for MS (i.e. MATLAB)

  • Experience with established and emerging data technologies and established data management and reporting technologies, such as columnar, Hadoop, and NoSQL databases, predictive analytics, data visualization, and unstructured data

  • Proficiency in Python, R, Matlab, C++, SQL.
