POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under direction of a project geophysicist, site geophysicist, and project manager, a Field Geophysicist performs a variety of data collection tasks using geophysical and GPS equipment. Those tasks include conducting quality control tests and collecting digital geophysical data to support remedial investigation or removal action projects at formerly used defense sites with potential unexploded ordnance contamination. Between field assignments the Field Geophysicist supports the project team by assisting with work plan preparation, report writing, and data analysis. The field geophysicist will work up to leading the field component of the geophysical investigation and performing data processing and interpretation. Assignments are designed to develop a practical knowledge of geophysical data acquisition, processing and analysis and assist the project team in the remedial investigation or removal action. The main focus of this role is working on sites with unexploded ordinance but may also include some soil and water remediation projects. Extensive travel around the USA to various field sites. 40-60% travel.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Acquiring EM61-MK2, G-858, MetalMapper, andMPV data

  • Performing field and office tasks requiring the application of basic geophysical principles and theories

  • Performing anomaly reacquisition using EM61-MK2, Real-time Kinematic GPS sensors, and robotic total station systems

  • Conducting or monitoring daily quality control tests of equipment and methods and documenting test results in an Access-format data base

  • Collecting detailed field notes about geophysical surveys and site conditions

  • Processing EM61-MK2 andG-858 data using Geosoft's Oasis Montaj software

  • Interpreting geophysical data collected with the instruments listed above

  • B.S. Geophysics/Geologist

  • 0-3 Years of experience preferred

  • This position requires significant field work with some projects lasting multiple months in multiple locations with the US and Overseas.

  • The field work can be strenuous, with 10-hour work days, hot, humid coditions, and less than comfortable environments.

*The associate scientist will be teamed with more experienced employees for the first few filed assignments, then will be expected to take on a leadership role after they have acquired a basic understanding of the work.
