The VDOT Safety Service Patrol (SSP) Program provides safe, quick clearance of incidents that affect traffic, including disabled vehicles. The primary purpose of the SSP program is to ensure the roadways are free of obstructions and safe for the traveling public. SSP Supervisor will assist the SSP Manager in the overall performance of Regional SSP Operations. Will be responsible to supervise the direct implementation of SSP Operator services for a group of routes or a geographical area on each shift, including supervising SSP Operators in the performance of their patrol duties, making ready the fleet and associated assets, and assisting all SSP Supervisors and Leads in the performance of their duties. In addition to providing field supervision, the Supervisor will be responsible for the ready augmentation capability and route coverage support, minimizing route downtime. The Supervisor relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. This position is considered essential and will require long hours and the necessity to be available during all special events, to include all weather related activities, that may require you to remain overnight (accommodations will be provided)


  • Assist the SSP Manager with all aspects of the Safety Service Patrol program to include daily operations, personnel, equipment, planning, safety policies and logistics.

  • Assist all Supervisors in conducting smooth operations and guiding the SSP staff in mission accomplishment

  • Assigns SSP Operators daily tasks and supervises the details, means, methods and processes by which these tasks are completed

  • Provides daily supervision of the SSP Operators

  • Ensures all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are followed by SSP Operators

  • Conducts work related performance investigations on SSP Operators

  • Record work-related injuries and illness of SSP Operators

  • Confirms the daily shift schedule and manages field route assignments

  • Assist in the hiring process by reviewing, conducting interviews and making recommendation for SSP Operators

  • Assure the close out shift paperwork when is complete

  • Reviews SSP Operators correspondence, reports, policy, procedures

  • May conducts pre-shift briefs and evaluates current SSP Operators for skill improvement

  • Participates in Post Incident analysis

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Work may be performed on and along a highway transportation environment, which has inherent dangers from moving traffic. Strict Safety Protocols are required. The following physical demands are frequently required as part of the role:

  • Balancing activities that require body equilibrium

  • Stooping and bending activities that include bending downward and forward

  • Lifting / carrying weight up to 50lbs

  • Driving a truck approximately 200mi /

  • Walking and sitting

  • Seeing (including field of vision)

  • Visual inspections

  • Hand movement including: holding, finger dexterity and grasping

  • Hearing

  • Repetitive motions

  • Working with machine operations

  • Working in an outside environment (cold and hot temperatures, light/daytime-dark/nighttime) with exposure to wind, rain, snow

  • Working around hazards (traffic)

  • Working around loud noise and high noise levels

  • Work area subject to vibration

  • Requires PPE


  • Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent with at least 5 years of experience in the field or a related area

  • Driver’s License with excellent driving record

  • Familiar with a variety of the operations’ concepts, practices, and procedures

  • Familiar with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the Incident Command System protocols

  • Computer proficiency: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel Power Point, Outlook)

  • Strong public speaking and verbal communications

  • Demonstrated ability to administer a variety of activities simultaneously, set priorities and meet deadlines

  • Strict Safety Protocols are required

  • Familiarization with the Safety Service Patrol SOP and Virginia Work Area Protection Manual

  • ICS 100, 200, 700, 800, TIMS, and SHRP II certified

  • Knowledge of the Northern Virginia interstates
