Role Summary

The Power System Engineer on Riyadh Metro Project forms an essential part of ensuring that the Riyadh Metro power supply system is safe and capable of meeting the operational performance criteria. Ensuring that the power supply systems are correctly specified and procured on time, through an efficient and robust process will have a major impact on the success of the overall programme.

Reporting to the Lead Engineer, The Power Systems Engineer is responsible for power system strategy and developing the functional and technical standards to which the systems will be designed.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Managing Traction Power Supply Systemconstruction works

  • Ensuring all actions are performed accordingto the guidelines and regulations of the project (drawings, method statementsetc.)

  • Providing technical guidance with emphasis onTraction Power Supply and training staff (Power/Electrical Technicians etc.)

  • Primary engineering responsibility forelectrical design tasks including requirements analysis, specificationgeneration, interface definition, component selection, circuit simulation,schematic capture, and board layout for low-voltage of switching power supplysolutions

  • Developing mathematical models

  • Preparing power system studies for AC and DCelectrified Railway systems

  • Preparing computer simulations and studiesincluding AC and DC load flow, short-circuit availability, motor-starting, andprotective relay coordination studies

  • Performing site investigations in substationsand along railroad tracks

  • Preparing technical and cost proposals

  • Taking a lead role in theinstallation and commissioning of electrical equipment in the field.

  • Developing and delivering technical papers tostakeholders

  • Leading technical design for both AC and DCrailway electrification projects

  • Review of complete documentation packages forproject, including design, as-built, O+M manuals, installation andcommissioning guides, etc

  • Designing power supply assemblies forspecification compliance.

  • Verifying that designs meet or exceed allrequirements and specifications.

  • Developing technical solutions to knownproduction, reliability, or performance problems.

  • Generating design documentation to ensure thedelivery of a quality finished product.

  • Facilitating design reviews with key stakeholders, including Design Engineering, Production and Manufacturing.

  • Participating in interdisciplinary designteams and reviews

  • Troubleshooting and bringing up powersupplies, developing and implementing test infrastructure, analyzingcharacterization data and make necessary design changes to meet productspecifications


  • At least 10 years’ experience in Traction Power Supply System Engineering, ideally in Metro / High Speed Railway Projects

  • Evidence of a successful track record in a similar role on a large infrastructure project;

  • Willingness to relocate to Riyadh

  • Proven track record of the design of HV and LV power systems associated with suburban and mainline railways

  • Demonstrable understanding of the technical standards, both national and international, which apply to power and railway system design and operation;

  • Experience in electrified railway substation and power distribution systems designs in:

  • AC and DC traction power system design

  • 600/750 volt DC rail transit traction power substations

  • 25KV rail transit traction power substations Frequency Converters

  • Stray Current Mitigation

  • Wayside cable plant

  • Circuit breakers

  • Switchgear

  • Transformers

  • Rectifiers

  • SCADA and PLC Protection Systems

  • Overhead catenaries and third rail characteristics


  • Gulf Experience

  • Power Electronic control protection

  • Understanding of multi-modular converters
